Supported image formats in toSVG

Getting Started

ToSVG supports multiple image formats for conversion and processing. Each format behaves slightly differently, and understanding these differences helps you get better results.

This guide explains which formats are supported and what to expect from each.

Supported Formats Overview

ToSVG currently supports the following raster image formats:

  • PNG
  • JPG / JPEG
  • WEBP
  • GIF
  • BMP
  • TIFF

All supported formats can be used with the Image to SVG tool. Some formats may also be used with Background Removal and Image Resize.

PNG

Best for:

  • Logos
  • Icons
  • Flat graphics
  • Images with transparency

Why PNG works well:

  • Lossless format
  • Sharp edges
  • Preserves transparency

Notes: PNG is often the best starting point for SVG conversion, especially for clean, high-contrast images.

JPG / JPEG

Best for:

  • Photos
  • Complex images
  • Large images with many colors

Limitations:

  • Lossy compression
  • Compression artifacts may appear in SVG output

Tips:

  • Use high-quality JPGs
  • Avoid heavily compressed images when possible

WEBP

Best for:

  • Modern web images
  • Smaller file sizes with good quality

Notes: WEBP can produce good results, but conversion quality depends on how aggressively the image was compressed.

GIF

Best for:

  • Simple graphics
  • Icons
  • Flat illustrations

Limitations:

  • Limited color palette
  • Animation is not preserved in SVG conversion

Important: Animated GIFs are converted as static images.

BMP

Best for:

  • Legacy images
  • Uncompressed raster data

Notes: BMP files are large but clean. They can produce accurate SVG results due to the lack of compression.

TIFF

Best for:

  • Professional images
  • Print-quality assets
  • High-resolution source files

Notes: TIFF files may result in complex SVGs due to their detail level. Optimization is often recommended after conversion.

Choosing the Right Format

If you have multiple format options:

  • Prefer PNG for logos and icons
  • Use JPG or WEBP for photos
  • Avoid unnecessary compression before conversion

The cleaner the source image, the better the SVG result.

Unsupported or Limited Formats

  • PDF files are not supported
  • RAW camera formats are not supported
  • Animated formats are converted as static images

If a format is unsupported, ToSVG will not process the file.

Common Questions

Does file format affect SVG quality?
Yes. Compression, color depth, and transparency all influence the final SVG.

Does file format affect conversion speed?
Yes. Larger and more complex images take longer to process.

Summary

Format Best Use
PNG Logos, icons, transparency
JPG Photos, complex images
WEBP Modern web images
GIF Simple static graphics
BMP Legacy, uncompressed images
TIFF High-quality professional assets

Understanding supported formats helps you choose the best starting point and avoid unnecessary conversion issues.
